| Wear a bra, for the good of the country
Dana Poole, in our last episode, was told to put on a
bra or face suspension. Harvey is the one who complained about it
and is now asking Harper how to deal with the situation. He tells
Harvey to inspire the students to wear a bra so he goes into a
motivational speech in front of his class. Ha! What a
joke! He tells them it would serve their country if they wore bras
because it would make them all equals with men! I t's
very hard to
explain here, but if you want to hear the speech for yourself, download it
here! (very long, but funny) In
response to his
ridiculous speech the whole class, led by
Dana Poole, remove their bras followed by the females in all the other
grades and before you know it there are bras hanging from lockers all over
the school. Guber sends for Poole. As he is on the way to the
office he speaks briefly with Marilyn and tells her to dress more
"conservatively" in light of the bra incident and her finishing
first in the poll from episode one. As he questions Dana about the
bras he sniffs her and accuses her of smoking pot and asks for a urine
sample. She refuses and leaves the office. Dana goes directly
to Harry and asks him for another favor. She needs to get off the
hook for the pot smoking. She's in danger of expulsion
otherwise. You can see that Harry has had enough of the blackmail
and tells her she can't keep doing this every time she has a
problem. She continues to threaten to tell Harper about their
"secret" unless he gets her off the hook. H e agrees to
think it over. Harry later goes to Harper's office to discuss the
Poole expulsion. He works his magic and manages to put some doubt in
their minds telling them that with all the other issues going on, an
expulsion over suspected pot smoking would only make things worse.
They agree with his argument and only give her a 3 day suspension.
Dana goes to Harry to thanks him for getting her out of it. Harry
flares up and tells her that if she ever asks for ANY favor again, he will
tell Harper about the secret himself! He finally clams down and asks
her "Why did you kiss me anyway?" ( finally we find out the
secret). She responds that she really does like him and that she
wants to date him after she graduates in May. Harry tells her that
there's no way he would ever date someone who has blackmailed him and that
nothing will EVER happen between them. Harry, talking privately with
Milton and Kevin, tells them that he kissed Dana Poole and that he has
been blackmailed twice for it. They are shocked and suggest that he
spill the beans to Harper. You can tell that he is contemplating
it. Later that evening, 9:30 to be exact, Dana Poole's mother,
Sandra Mason, meets Harper and Guber at the school wanting to discuss the
" dress code" selectively assigned to Dana. Despite
exhaustion they agree to meet and explain the situation.
Holt 45
Another round of scathing website parodies are viewed on
the Sheryl Holt website. Milton shows the latest one to
Harper. It consists of Milton defecating into his own mouth with a caption
that reads, "Buttle reloads for his next lecture". This
time she has gone too far and Harper sends for her. He tells her she
must remove the cartoon or face suspension. She claims the first
amendment and refuses to remove it because she is a journalist. He
tells her it is rude and vulgar and has no place in journalism.
Later Harvey comes to Guber with a complaint about the Holt site.
This time it shows Lipschultz prancing around wearing a bra and waving an
American flag. It is in response to his ridiculous speech given
earlier. Although mean, it is not vulgar and Harvey has to live with
it, or does he? Holt barges into the teacher's lounge shortly after
and accuses Milton of sending a virus to her website because it is
crashing ever time someone logs on. Well, come to find out, it was
Harvey! He has a niece with super computer abilities who is really
good "at those virus things" as he says. Score one for the
old guy!
The odd Couple
Marla returns to the school to meet with Harper in an
attempt to get her job back. He agrees to talk with her and assess
the situation. While talking with her, he can tell she's still not
quite right, despite her claims to be taking her medication
regularly. She still wants to teach and he apparently wants her
back. Harper decides to kill two birds with one stone. He
needs to keep an eye on the ever erratic Lipschultz and he needs to
monitor Marla as well so he decides to make them co-teach. He calls
them in and presents the idea to them. Neither seem thrilled about
it, being so much opposites. Guber tells them to make it work.
Well, they begin their teaching together and there are obvious clashes in
opinions. What Marla brings to the table is in contradiction to
Harvey, but the ideas presented to the class become more dynamic and
interesting because of it. They eventually get into a heated debate
about Thomas Jefferson with Marla contesting that he had slaves.
Harvey somehow responds that he himself was descended from blacks that
were blacker than she is! Harper and Guber talk to Harvey about the
comment later in the day and put him on probation for the comments he has
made recently. Harvey tells them that he has been teaching for 50
years, why should he change now? Harper tells him, "Because you
have been teaching the same way for 50 years".
Lonely Lauren and her fingerprints
Lauren is adamant about not being fingerprinted because
it undermines her as a teacher. She tells Harper that she refuses to
be fingerprinted. She feels very strongly about it and even gets
Milton and Marilyn to join her crusade. Guber meets her in the hall
and asks her to join him for a cup of coffee. She is a bit reluctant
but agrees
and they meet at lunch. She tells him again that the
whole Holt website issue (see last epi) was not true and he's okay with it
all. He asks her if she would join him at the Philharmonic the next
time they are in town. Again she refuses and can see that his line
of questioning is a thinly veiled disguise to get at some other
issue. He then brings up the fingerprinting problem. He tells
her to lay off while the superintendent is around to take some of the heat
off of Harper. She is appalled to hear that the whole
"date" was a ploy to get her to change her mind about the
fingerprints and becomes even more determined. Harry meets Lauren
outside of his classroom and talks with her about her problems. He
is still feeling bad about the Poole thing but tells her to stick by her
guns as far as the fingerprinting goes. She asks him if he's seeing
anyone and he asks her the same. They both agree that they need
"balance" in their work and home lives to make it as
teachers. The also agree to look for someone for each other to date,
because dating in the workplace is a bad idea. Yet you can feeling
something going on there. Lauren talks with Harper after school and
tells him that she feels slighted by the fingerprinting issue. She
is considered "unsuccessful" by her family because she is a
teacher and doesn't make enough money to even live comfortably.
Harper asks her if she likes teaching. She says she loves it.
Harper then asks her, "Then what are you complaining about?"
Shinn vs. Harper...FIGHT!
The superintendent visits Harper on the one day when
everything is going wrong. When she enters he has an icepack on his
head. She comments on it and he just rolls his eyes. She
addresses every situation he has had to deal with in the last two episodes
and questions his judgment on all of them. He tells her that he
supports the teachers on their view of the fingerprinting and refuses to
fire Harry over the gun incident and even defends himself over his
physicality with Malcolm White. He tells her that he has a lot of
problems here, and she's one of
them. She came there looking for explanations
for his actions, but tells him that he should go to the committee meeting
himself and explain it to them on his own. |
